Brief Profile

Dr. Konchok Tashi has been working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Far East Languages, Central University of Jharkhand, Ranchi since August 2012. He did Shastri Degree (Graduation) from Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Varanasi. Dr. Tashi holds Master Degree (M.A.) in both Linguistics as well as in English Literature from Deccan College, Post Graduate & Research Institute, Pune and Fergusson College, University of Pune, Pune respectively. He was awarded a two-year Scholarship under the Scheme Grant of Scholarship to Tribal Students by Central Institute of Indian Languages, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, Mysore for pursuing M.A. in Linguistics. He did his Ph.D. from the University of Mysore in Linguistics on Ladakhi language. Dr. Tashi was awarded the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship RGNF (JRF & SRF) by University Grants Commission (UGC) for pursuing Ph.D. Degree in Linguistics. Subsequently, he was also awarded Post-Doctoral Fellowship in 2011 by Department of Science & Technology (DST), Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India under the national scheme Cognitive Science Research Initiative (CSI) for undertaking research entitled A Cognitive Account of Perception Verbs in Ladakhi. Prior to joining Central University of Jharkhand, Dr. Tashi worked as Resource Person, Senior Resource Person and Chief Investigator on various Govt. approved projects such as Digital Documentation of Minor Indian Languages (in collaboration with Uppsala University, Sweden), CIIL-Motorola Spoken Corpora, Sociolinguistic Survey of Bhoti Language & Linguistics & Cultural Documentation of Sikkim at Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore. Dr. Tashi was invited to Uppsala University, Sweden for continuing the joint research work on the documentation of Lesser-Known languages of the Himalayas. The research work was a continuation of the collaborative research between Uppsala University, Sweden and Central Institute of Indian Languages, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, Mysore. Dr. Tashi has published number of articles and research papers in national and international as well as contributed book chapters in edited volumes. He published an edited book, entitled, Languages of Indian Himalayas in 2021 for which he has been awarded India Prime Awards-2021 by FoXclues and recognized him among the 100 author awardees. Dr. Tashi was conferred with the Best Researcher Award 2022 by Central University of Jharkhand during its 13th Annual Foundation Day for his Distinct Contribution in the Field of Research. He also presented several research papers in national and international seminars/conferences and had several international collaborative projects.

Ongoing project

  1. Dr. Tashi is a Co-PI in an ongoing project entitled Field based 3D Laser Scanner Structural (Exterior and interior) Mapping and monitoring of Buddhist Monasteries for Conservation planning incorporating Natural hazards in parts of Lahaul-Spiti-Ladakh cold desert region of India @Rs. 1,10,72,031/- (Rupees One Crore Ten Lakh Seventy-Two Thousand Thirty-One only) funded by DST, Govt. of India vide Sanction Order No. DST/SHRIC/SHRI-16/2022 (C&G) in collaboration with Prof. Arvind Chandra Pandey (PI), Department of Geoinformatics, CUJ.
  2. Dr. Tashi also received a project on Pedagogical Grammar of Ladakhi Language under the Government of India's scheme on the preparation of Pedagogical Grammar of various Non-Scheduled Indian Languages, sanctioned vide reference No. NTS-I/EOI/2023-24 dated 19th January 2024, funded by National Testing Services-India (NTS-I), Central Institute of Indian Languages, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, Mysuru, Karnataka.

International collaborative projects

I had collaborated the following projects with Professor Anju Saxena Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University, Sweden who is the project leader:

  1. Multimedia and GIS supported language Documentation of the Himalayas with the focus on ethno-biological terms, financed by the Swedish Research Council and SIDA.
  2. Contrastive studies in the lexicon and grammar in the languages of the Himalayas, financed by the Faculty of Languages, Uppsala University, Sweden.
  3. Digital areal Linguistics: a lexical view of the Himalayan microarea, financed by the Swedish Research Council.

Research experience

  1. Had worked as a Resource Person on the Govt. approved project entitled ‘Lesser-Known Languages of India’ under the main project “Digital Documentation of Minor Indian Languages” at Central Institute of Indian Languages, MHRD, Govt. of India, Mysore in collaboration with Uppsala University, Sweden since 1st June’2004 to 31st March 2006. Languages like Tinani, Gahri, Chinal Bhasha were researched in detail. See this link www.ciil-spokencorpus.net for more information. The main task in this project was to do a comparative study with Classical Tibetan, transcription and analysis for the linguistic data.
  2. Had worked as a Senior Resource Person on the Govt. approved project entitled “CIIL-Motorola Spoken Corpora” from 1st April 2006 to 15 January 2007 at Central Institute of Indian Languages, MHRD, Govt. of India, Mysore in collaboration with Motorola Private Company, Bangalore. A Spoken Corpora was prepared for Hindi and Indian English and submitted to Motorola Private Company, USA for designing a voice-recognition mobile handset mainly for the uneducated Indians. This will also help in reaching the latest technology to the common people beyond social and economic barriers. Responsibilities: Supervised the Indian English team, Data collection in all the metro cities of the country, Transcription in IPA and SAMPA symbols, linguistic analysis, splitting of audio files etc.
  3. Had worked as a Chief Investigator on the Govt. approved project “Linguistics & Cultural Documentation of Sikkim” under the NER scheme from October 2007 to 31 March 2008 at Central Institute of Indian Languages, MHRD, Govt. of India, Mysore. The language and culture aspects of different communities were studied and documented. The communities we studied include Bhutia, Sherpa, Lepcha, Tamang, Gurung, Sunwar, Newar, Limboo, and Rai (Bantawa & Chamling Rai) etc.
  4. Had worked as a Resource Person on the most important Govt. approved project “Sociolinguistic Survey of Bhoti Language: Planning for Recognition and Development” at Central Institute of Indian Languages, MHRD, Govt. of India, Mysore in collaboration with National Commission for Minorities, Govt. of India from July 2008 to March 2009.

Dr. Tashi was invited to Uppsala University, Sweden for 10 days during July ending 2011 and beginning of August 2011 for continuing the joint research work on the documentation of languages of the Himalayas.
