M. Tech. (Computer Science) with specialization in - Mobile Computing

 

The proliferation of portable, sophisticated yet affordable mobile computing devices (such as laptops, smart phones, PDAs, Bluetooth personal devices) and the widespread use of Internet technologies have made possible a mobile computing era in which users, on the move, can seamlessly access network services and resources, from virtually any-where, at any-time. The goal of the M. Tech. (Computer Science – Mobile Computing) is to educate people who are already equipped with substantial knowledge in the fields of computer and communications technology, information technology and computer application, to professionally manage projects in this future technology both technically and organizationally. Primarily it offers specific skills required for designing, developing, and deploying mobile applications and designing suitable network architectures.

Mode of Offering: Self-financing mode.   Fees: Rs.50000/- per semester without hostel.

Admissions Requirements: B.Tech. (CS/IT/EC) / MCA /M.Sc.(Comp. Sc.) with at least 60% marks in aggregate and  interview.

Faculty: For the time being faculty is pooled in from neighboring institutes like IIT-KGP, Jadavpur University, Indian Statistical Institute-Kolkata, BIT-Mesra, BHU, IIT-Kanpur and others.

Industry Involvement: The mobile and the software companies have evinced interest in such a program informally, and good final placement as well as summer internship of eight weeks should not be difficult to arrange.

Mode of delivery: Besides the usual class room and laboratory interactions the delivery for this program will be considerably based upon modern e-learning technology. In the first year the delivery would made through class room and laboratory sessions for about 65% and through interactive e-learning mode for about 35% where professors and experts from leading institutes and industry would run online sessions through two way video conferencing, video/audio chats, online/off line studies, discussion boards, video streaming and document transfer among others. In future online component may increase depending upon the feedback of the students, faculty and the associates from the industry (prospective employers).  Each semester would consist approximately of 16 weeks of classes, 35-40 sessions of one hour each per subject. A unique feature is that the program incorporates Company or Institute Internship, requiring student to do a eight weeks of industrial/institute attachment at the end of the first year. This provides students with invaluable working experience and exposures to industrial issues for pursuing research and development.

Career Options: Mobile Computing is a rapidly expanding area of business. Companies are increasingly turning their attentions to the potential for distributed mobile information systems and mobile applications. A plethora of career opportunities are now surfacing.

A work group has been formed including the faculty from IITs, Jadavpur University- Kolkata, Indian Statistical Institute-Kolkata, BIT-Mesra, BHU, IIT-Kanpur and industry experts from Aircel, Vodafone, Motorola, Reliance, Samsung, Nokia, Ericsson, TCS, Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro, IBM, Capgemini, Accenture, AT&T, Microsoft, and other companies involved in mobile computing and communications to help in delivering the programme and placement of the students.
